Products we love: Responseability sunglasses

As you know, we love any brand and/or product that's committed to bettering our beautiful oceans. Responseability is another great company that turns ocean waste plastic into stylish sunglasses with UV400 polarized lenses. Help clean the oceans and protect your eyes, one pair of sunglasses at a time!

What is Ocean Waste Plastic?

Ocean Waste Plastic, also known as OWP, is plastic waste that somehow has entered the ocean and now is e.g. harming marine life and polluting our beautiful oceans.

An indirect benefit of Ocean Waste Plastic is that the production of recycled plastic, OWP, uses 85% less energy and emits 75% fewer greenhouse gasses than the production of virgin plastic.

What difference does it make to buy a pair of Responseability sunglasses?

When you buy a pair of Responseability sunglasses, you actively remove 1 kilo of plastic from the oceans. This makes a noticeable difference as it only takes one single plastic bag to kill a turtle. Moreover, you increase the awareness of the ocean plastic crisis.

When Responseability cleans up plastic from the ocean, they don't differentiate between the plastic that is usable for sunglasses and the plastic that is not. The main purpose of Responseability is to clean the oceans from plastic, so they pick up everything!

For every kilo of plastic they clean up, approximately 5% of the plastic is used for a pair sunglasses. 75% of the plastic is used for various types of packaging, and finally the remaining 20% of the plastic gets burned as the quality of the plastic is too degraded for recycling.

Where does the plastic for the sunglasses come from?

When purchasing a pair of Responseability sunglasses, you will receive a unique QR code. This will provide information on where the batch of plastic, that your sunglasses have been made from, has been collected. The plastic collected to produce the sunglasses is primarily collected in the ocean outside Jakarta, Indonesia.

Who collects the plastic?

The collectors are local Indonesian fishermen who collect plastic on their way out to set nets or on their way back home. The local Indonesian fishermen are heavily affected by increasing plastic pollution, as it affects the amount of fish. Responseability has a close collaboration with these fishermen and provide them with material that they might need.

What type of plastic is used to produce the sunglasses?

Responseability uses a plastic-type called PET (polyethylenterephth) to produce their sunglasses. This is the same type of plastic material that single-use water bottles are made of.

Also each pair of sunglasses are unique, no pair will be a 100% alike due to the ocean waste plastic reacting differently every time. This also makes the sunglasses unique and they might even have some small beauty flaws from the ocean waste plastic.

This just gives you a better opportunity to share the story behind your Responseability sunglasses. At only $89, that sounds like a pretty good deal to us!
